Balance Diagnostics and Rehabilitation

With falls being the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in individuals 65 years of age and older, it is important to know your options for testing and rehabilitation. Not only are costs rising for the care of these individuals either for the high death toll or for treatment and recovery that results from these disabling accidents.

The loss of independence is significant either as a fear of falling or as a result of having had a fall. There are many providers out there that offer generic fall prevention programs but only address issues such as environment like general home safety. However, those that may have more severe types of balance disorders – such as dizziness, will fall regardless of the environment.

It is important to seek professional help for testing for these balance disorders as it not only interferes with daily activities, work and travel, it can also be a sign of underlying issues affecting the Nervous System, Vestibular System and general Proprioception (the body’s awareness to its self).

Although Arroyo Physical Therapy in Pasadena, CA is primarily concerned with Vestibular Rehabilitation, it is also important for us to have resources available for more advanced testing, such as VNG (Videonystagmography), CDP (Computerized Dynamic Posturography) and VAT (Vestibular Autorotation Testing).

If you suffer from severe or slight imbalance, have a history of falls, vertigo, dizziness – either acute or chronic, have general gait, balance or movement disorders, concussion or head trauma, TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury), other age related instability, chemotherapy or inner ear surgery, it might be a good idea to get tested and see if testing is right for you.

Signs and Symptoms of Common Balance Disorders:
– Vertigo – Ringing in the Ear – Dizziness – Unsteadiness – Faint Feeling – Depression – Nausea – Headaches – Wooziness – Hearing Loss – Blurred Vision – Imbalance – Instability – Fear of Falling – Lightheadedness – Motion Sickness – Memory Loss – Tinnitus

If you suffer from any of these, testing may be appropriate. Arroyo Physical Therapy has resources to help you get tested and rehabilitated to make your life Fun and Functional Again.

Balance Screening and Testing

Did you know that nearly 1/2 of all accidental deaths among the elderly are a result of a fall? Among the most common complaints to doctors and physicians is patients reporting falls, dizziness and imbalance, yet most physicians and patients are unaware that these conditions can be treated by Physical Therapy very effectively.

What causes Dizziness, Imbalance and Falls? Some causes may be: middle ear infections, allergies, toxic exposure to medications or chemicals, stroke, head injuries, poor physical condition, diabetes, neuropathy, and other metabolic disorders. Of course, there may be other causes as well. Due to a variety of causes, proper testing and physical evaluation is necessary to ensure proper treatment and therapy.

Testing can include Vestibular Autorotation Test (VAT), Bengin Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), Ocular Motor Exam and General Physical Screening. Of course your physician may order other tests as well.

Here at Arroyo Physical Therapy we offer these tests. The tests are safe, non-invasive and comfortable. Our therapy programs are successful are designed to help restore functional mobility and balance.
