Arthritis and Moving!

Approximately 50 Million Americans have been diagnosed with arthritis - of which 2/3 are under the age of 65 - and are greatly impacted by this musculoskeletal disease of the joints. There are 2 major types of arthritis - Osteoarthritis, the degenerative joint disease, and - Inflammatory Rheumatoid Arthritis, the auto-immune disease that inflames the joints. There are more than 100 types of arthritis, so you can only be diagnosed by your physician.

It is important to recognize your risk factors including family history, excessive weight, joint overuse or injury, etc. Essential things to keep in mind if you have or are likely to have arthritis is to: 1) try to maintain a healthy body weight, 2) keep a regular exercise regime, 3) consider non-medicinal pain remedies and 4) be open to non traditional pain relief such as herbal supplements, massage, acupuncture, relaxation techniques and topical pain gels. Always check with your physician prior to anything new, as you want to make sure there are no complication with other remedies you are on.

Arthritis can affect how you move and your balance and coordination, and despite the fact that moving can be uncomfortable and at times painful, it is important to keep moving to prevent further complications from NOT moving.
